Smoke alarms help save thousands of lives every year by providing early warning in the event of emergency. As the most trusted brand in fire safety, First Alert has been protecting homes and families since 1958 and is proud to offer a variety of reliable and easy installation options for home smoke detectors. Of the decisions you’ll make for your family during your lifetime, installing a First Alert smoke alarm in your home is one of the most important.

First Alert products offer a variety of home fire alarm options with features including:

According to the National Fire Protection Association, alarms should be installed on every level of your home, including the basement, inside each bedroom and near each sleeping area. Remember to test your home smoke detectors at least once a month and change the batteries when they are low, at least every six months, or upgrade to a 10-year sealed battery smoke detector to eliminate the need for battery replacements for the life of the alarm. Regardless of what type, all smoke detectors in your home should be replaced at least every 10 years. Shop our wide variety of home smoke detectors and fire alarms to add reliable protection you can trust from First Alert.

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide, also known as CO, is called the “Invisible Killer” because it’s a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. More than 150 people in the Unites States die every year from accidental nonfire-related CO poisoning associated with consumer products, including generators. Other products include faulty, improperly-used or incorrectly-vented fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, stoves, water heaters and fireplaces. Source: Consumer Product Safety Commission

Because CO is odorless, colorless, and otherwise undetectable to the human senses, people may not know that they are being exposed. The initial symptoms of low to moderate CO poisoning are similar to the flu (but without the fever). They include:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

High level CO poisoning results in progressively more severe symptoms, including:

  • Mental confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of muscular coordination
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Ultimately death
