About Us

Bibens Home Center, the first Bibens Ace location, was founded in Springfield, VT in 1949 by Eric R. Bibens, a builder of fine homes. In 1972, he decided to expand the retail store to 6,500 sq. ft. and close the construction division. The store was a member of the Service Star Hardware co-op until 1982 when the current owner, Eric R. Bibens II, purchased the business from his father and converted it to the Ace Hardware brand.

In 1986, the original property was sold, re-opening in a newly constructed 18,000 sq. ft. building with 12,500 sq. ft. of retail space which remains in operation today. At our flagship location we offer all departments of Ace Hardware, a kitchen showroom, lumber yard and building supply, our very own small engine repair shop, and a full-service UPS shipping center.

Our second location, Bibens Lakeshore Hardware & Marine (now known as Bibens Ace Colchester) was purchased in August of 2000. This store, located in Colchester, VT, was a 10,000 sq. ft. True Value store that was converted to the Ace Hardware banner. We offer all nine departments of Ace Hardware as well as a wide range of hunting, fishing, and marine items complete with live bait and Vermont State fishing and hunting licenses.

In August of 2002, Bibens Ace expanded into South Burlington, VT to develop a new 14,000 sq. ft. Ace store, Bibens Ace South Burlington. This store is the largest of our stores and opened on November 11, 2002 to offer the full line of Ace Hardware products, along with convenience and above-and-beyond service unique to our stores.

In January 2006, Hills True Value Hardware was purchased and re-branded Bibens Ace Burlington. This 8,900 sq. ft. store offers all standard Ace Hardware departments as well as an extensive line of lawn and garden, everyday housewares, and a wide assortment of seasonal plants.

Bibens Ace Essex was built from the ground up and started operation in April 2008. The Essex store is approximately 10,000 sq. ft. and is located within the outlet shopping center in Essex Center. Here we offer all standard Ace Hardware departments as well as the same convenience and superior customer service notable in our other locations.

On October 1, 2013, we acquired Brown & Roberts in downtown Brattleboro, VT. Brown & Roberts, a family-owned and operated business and longtime friend of the community, is your quintessential Vermont hardware store. Spanning three different levels of wood covered floors, the store has a total of 9,000 sq. ft. of retail space. Brown & Roberts is known for their large variety of products; the breadth of their inventory is impressive.

In January of 2018, we expanded into Woodstock, VT by purchasing Woodstock Home & Hardware, re-branding as Woodstock Ace Home & Hardware. This store is approximately 9,000 sq. ft. and offers all Ace Hardware departments, in addition to Hunter Douglas shades, unique home-décor merchandise, and the full line of Benjamin Moore paints. Woodstock Ace Home & Hardware is also a full-service FedEx and UPS shipping center.

So what sets us apart from the big-box retailers?

We listen to our customers each and every day about the items and services they need. Through the backing of our distribution center with over 65,000 items and our sister stores, we go out of our way to accommodate each customer’s individual needs. We’re our own buyers which enables us to receive items within a week, if not sooner. Few other retailers can match that combination. Here at Bibens Ace, we are happy to help you in any way that we can, continuing the tradition of the helpful place with a family face.

The Helpful Team

Rick Bibens, President

Rick Bibens, president of Bibens Ace Hardware, began his career in 1978 when he moved back to Springfield, VT to takeover his father’s hardware store and lumber yard, Bibens Home Center. Over the past 40 years, Rick has grown the company from a single store to seven locations servicing Vermont from Brattleboro to Burlington.  He served on the national board of directors of Ace Hardware for nine years, representing the eastern region for Ace Hardware Corporation.

Rick has always been highly involved in the local community, where he is one of the founding members and president of the Springfield Regional Development Corporation, a board member of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, a former board member and Chairman of the Board of Springfield Hospital and of Springfield Medical Care Systems, In 2004, he was named Springfield’s ‘Citizen of the Year,’ where he currently resides in Springfield with his wife Gail, parents of three, and doting grandparents of four.

Matt Sacco, Vice President

Matt Sacco grew up in Washington Township, NJ, a town that is almost like a little slice of Vermont.  Matt received a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the University of Delaware (where he met his future-wife, Erica Bibens), and a Master’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Virginia.

Matt and Erica soon made the move to Philadelphia, PA, when he took a job with Ernst & Young, during which he pursued his CPA license.  They continued on to Boston, MA when Matt joined the Consulting and the Mergers & Acquisitions practice for Ernst & Young.  After having their first child, Matt and Erica wished to be closer to family, and so moved to Vermont.  This move was a welcomed change from corporate life, as he joined the family business as Vice President of Operations of Bibens Ace, all the while learning the ins and outs of hardware: nuts, bolts, grills, drills, and everything in between.

Matt and Erica now reside in Essex, where they enjoy every crazy minute of raising their three children: Kylie, Brayden and Hudson.  Matt is proud to have been a part of the acquisition of Brown & Roberts Ace in Brattleboro and, most recently, Woodstock Ace Home & Hardware in Woodstock.  He most enjoys learning the best ways to tackle his (ever ending) home improvement projects through the knowledgeable employees at Bibens and looks forward to helping the family business continue to grow in the years to come.

Janet Colbert, Controller

A Massachusetts native, Janet began her career working in the Boston area.  She was employed by a national roofing manufacturer for 12 years, where her position held was Corporate Treasury Manager.  She was also the Controller for a Boston-based advertising agency for several years.

In 1989, Janet and her husband moved to Chester, VT, when she began her career with Bibens Ace.  A tenure which has spanned almost 30 years, Janet has played an active role in the expansion of the business from one to seven stores across Vermont.  As Controller, she is responsible for retail financial services, financial accounting, risk management, cash management, and HR benefits compliance.

Greg Bibens, Marketing & Training Coordinator

Greg Bibens is a born and raised Vermonter.  Having grown up in the family business, he spent much of his youth working in the lumber yard, at the cash register, or stocking the aisles at the Springfield location.  Upon graduating from high school, Greg pursued his passion of the theatre, attending the musical theatre program at the University of Michigan.  In 2003, he moved to NYC, leading the life of a struggling actor, which often led to waiting tables or bartending to survive in the Big Apple.  In doing so, he developed another passion, the hospitality industry, and decided to return to school to train as a chef at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY.  After graduating he moved his way up in the business as a manager, general manager, and director of outlets at restaurants and hotels throughout Boston, NYC, and Chicago, leading successful teams through creative marketing, community outreach, and the development of various training programs.

In 2017, Greg moved back to Vermont to be closer to family, and has since rejoined the family business.  He brings his passion for hospitality, creative marketing, and training development back home to Bibens ACE and is proud to add another family face to the helpful place.
